How It Works

In the highly unlikely event of a severe accident at either Darlington or Pickering nuclear generating station, which could result in a release of radioactivity, the Province would order the public alerting system to be activated for the appropriate station.

During an emergency, the sirens will sound continuously for three minutes. It is important to note that the siren system is designed to ensure it will not damage hearing, no matter how close you are to a siren.
The alerting system is activated by the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS). DRPS will also activate the automated telephone dialing system. A pre-recorded message will be delivered to homes and businesses.
