Holiday celebrations, for many people, means stress or fear of gaining unwanted weight. Whether it's spending time with family or friends, or attending workplace functions, being prepared in advance of each celebration will help you eat healthy over the holidays.

Try the following strategies:

  • Be mindful of what you are eating. For example, notice what is in your hand, what food is on your plate. Eat slowly, paying attention to what you are eating, and when you are full.
  • Have a plan for each event you attend. Be prepared in advance for dealing with tempting or difficult situations, by setting limits. Enjoy your favourite holiday treats, but select only those you really enjoy. You can set limits for others, by saying 'no' to those who love to 'push food' too!
  • Avoid going to a party hungry. Eat a small, healthy snack an hour before a party. You'll find it easier to make healthy choices if you're not too hungry. Try plain yogurt with cut-up fruit.
  • As your party 'bring along' offer to make your favourite vegetable or fruit dish. That way, you are sure to have at least one healthy choice.
  • If you don't drink alcohol, don't start. If you do, drink less and less often. Not only can alcohol lower your willpower for eating healthy, but it contains empty calories too!
  • Be active for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Even periods of 10 minutes can count towards your total. Some is better than no activity, more is better. Studies show that staying active over the holiday can help to keep weight gain in check.

This year, enjoy all the season has to offer! Say good bye to holiday guilt and stay in charge of your holiday temptations. Promise yourself that you'll enjoy your favorite foods, balancing them with healthy choices the rest of the time.
