Extreme Heat

Who is at risk?

Extreme heat can put everyone at risk from heat illnesses. There are many risk factors that can increase a person's vulnerability to heat. These factors can be compounded when there are multiple risk factors present. For example a senior citizen living alone while on medication that affects heat sensitivity are at greater risk than a person having only one of those risk factors.

The health risks from extreme heat are greatest for:

  • older adultsSenior Couple
  • infants and young children
  • people with chronic illnesses, such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions, or mental illnesses (e.g. depression or dementia)
  • people who work in the heat
  • people who exercise in the heat
  • homeless people
  • low-income earners
