Flooding and Other Hazards

The hazards of floods can exist long after the waters have receded.  Flood waters can introduce contaminants in your home, both biological, chemical and physical hazards including broken glass, hidden debris and electrified waters.

The following are some other concerns that every victim of a flood should beware of:

  • Vermin and pests flooded out of their habitat may seek shelter in your home.  Ensure any openings (i.e. broken windows) are covered as soon as possible.
  • Electrical hazards may exist and it is important to contact your local power distributor or the Electrical Safety Authority for instruction.
  • Floods may leave pools of water suitable for mosquito breeding.  Where possible empty/drain any standing water from such items as:
    • Pails/drums
    • Children’s toys
    • Tires
    • Garbage receptacles
    • Any container capable of holding water
