Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation and the Sun

  • UV radiation is a type of invisible light that is given off by the sun and certain kinds of lamps such as tanning beds and sun lamps.
  • UV radiation can neither be seen nor felt.
  • There are 3 types of UV rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. 
  • UV rays reflect off many surfaces like water, cement and snow and can cause skin damage during any season or temperature.

The UV index indicates how strong the sun is and what precautions to take.  The UV index ranges from 0 to 11+.  The higher the UV index number, the stronger the sun’s rays and the greater the need to protect yourself from the sun.
