Larviciding in 2009

Catch Basin Larviciding
Regionally and municipally-owned roadside catch basins throughout the Region were monitored for larval mosquito activity beginning in June. Three catch basin treatments were conducted during the 2009 WNV season. The first catch basin treatment occurred in mid-June, with subsequent treatments in mid-July and mid-August. Twenty-one (21) days separated each larviciding treatment.

Three rounds of catch basin larviciding were conducted in 2009. Treatments were conducted during June, July and August. A total of 151,797 roadside catch basins were larvicided for the 3 treatments. An additional 306 catch basins on Regional properties were larvicided in late June.

Standing Water Larviciding
Beginning in mid-May, areas of standing, stagnant water were assessed as larval mosquito development sites. Where remediation of identified larval mosquito development sites was not possible, a biological larvicide was applied based on the results of a local risk assessment.

Larval mosquito surveillance of surface water began in early May with over 1500 site visits resulting in 325 applications of a biological larvicide to surface water.
