Larviciding in 2010

Catch Basin Larviciding
Regionally and municipally-owned roadside catch basins throughout the Region were monitored for larval mosquito activity beginning mid-May 2010. Three catch basin treatments were conducted during the 2010 WNV season. The first catch basin treatment occurred in mid-June, with subsequent treatments occurring mid-July and mid-August. In order to maximize effectiveness, the larvicide treatment periods were separated by a maximum of twenty-one (21) days.  A total of 153, 646 roadside catch basins and a further 275 catch basins located on Regionally or privately-owned property were treated overall.

Standing Water Larviciding
Beginning mid-May 2010, areas of standing, stagnant were assessed as potential larval mosquito development sites. Where remediation of identified larval mosquito development sites was not possible, a biological larvicide was applied following a local risk assessment. A total of 2,184 site visits were conducted between May and September 2010, resulting in a total of 503 larvicide treatments.
