Works Department celebrates Waste Reduction Week

WHITBY, ON October 17, 2014

WHITBY, ON – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department invites residents, businesses, municipalities and schools to celebrate Waste Reduction Week (WRW) from Oct. 20 to 26.

“Waste Reduction Week is a campaign led by the Recycling Council of Ontario that strives to educate, engage and empower Canadians to reduce, reuse and recycle waste,” says Mirka Januszkiewicz, Director of Waste Management. “We encourage all residents to consider new ways to reduce their waste—every effort counts.”

Here are 10 simple ways to reduce waste in your everyday life:

•  Pack a litterless lunch.

•  Consider making Halloween costumes from used materials instead of buying a new one.

•  Drink from a reusable beverage container.

•  Use reusable shopping totes instead of plastic bags.

•  Drop off unwanted paint at Durham’s Waste Management Facility’s free paint exchange program.

•  Buy in bulk to reduce packaging.

•  Choose reusable plates and cups over disposable ones at celebrations and parties.

•  Use energy-efficient lightbulbs, which last longer.

•  Clean with reusable rags and mops instead of single-use cleaning wipes.

•  Donate unwanted items to charity at Reuse Day on Oct. 25.

In celebration of Waste Reduction Week, residents are invited to view a series of educational displays that will be set up in the main lobby at Durham Regional Headquarters from Oct. 20 to 26.
