News Release

Durham Region releases unofficial election results; Roger Anderson announced as first directly elected Regional Chair

WHITBY, ON October 28, 2014

The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to announce that -- based on the unofficial results provided by each of the eight area municipal clerks (Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby) -- it would appear that Roger Anderson has been elected to the position of Regional Chair.

Based on this information, the Regional Clerk has unofficially announced Anderson as the successful Regional Chair candidate (the person who received the highest number of votes).

A copy of this announcement (via a Declaration of Unofficial Results from the Regional Clerk) is available online at or in person at Regional Headquarters (605 Rossland Rd. E., Whitby).

As soon as possible, after voting day, final official results will be sent to the Regional Clerk by all eight municipal clerks. The Regional Clerk will use this information to prepare the final summary and officially declare the candidate who received the highest number of votes (and is therefore, elected).

A copy of this Certificate of Election Results and Declaration of Candidate will be available online at or in person at Regional Headquarters. The Region will also release a biography about the successful candidate for Regional Chair, once this information is received.

This is the first time in the Region’s 40-year history that the Regional Chair has been elected by eligible voters. This position has a very important role to play—acting as the head of Durham Regional Council and Chief Executive Officer of the municipality; presiding over all meetings of Regional Council; being a member of all standing committees; promoting and advancing the Regional position on matters; and representing Durham Region on various boards, committees and organizations; and other significant duties.
