Durham Region honoured with international award for waste management practices

WHITBY, ON September 03, 2014

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department has been recognized internationally for its waste management practices with a silver award of excellence from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).

“The Region of Durham is honoured to be recognized by the Solid Waste Association of North America for our public education efforts in recycling,” says Cliff Curtis, Commissioner of Works. “Resident participation is the most important factor to increase recycling, so it is great to be acknowledged internationally for our public education efforts.

Durham Region was honoured for its campaign to promote the 2013 expansion of the Blue Box program to include rigid plastic packaging, such as berry trays, clear egg cartons and plastic take-out containers. The silver award of excellence commended Durham’s efforts to educate the public about this new program through the media, advertising, social media, our website, and public space advertising such as transit bus wraps and billboards.

“Through the new plastics recycling program, Durham Region was able to divert an additional 1,675 tonnes of plastic from landfill last year,” says Mirka Januszkiewicz, Director of Waste Management. “We are proud to be recognized for this achievement, which is a reflection of the outstanding services provided by our employees, and the dedication of our residents to manage their waste in a responsible way.”
