Potential labour disruption could impact programs and services

WHITBY, ON June 4, 2014 –The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to advise residents that a potential labour disruption (strike) could impact operations at several Regional facilities, beginning on Friday, June 13.

A new collective agreement has not yet been reached between the Region and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1764. This is the union that represents about 1,600 Regional employees (also known as our “inside workers”), who provide services in the areas of child care, income support, court services, public health inspections, traffic operations, paramedical services (paramedics) and more. The majority of these individuals are based at Regional Headquarters. 

The Region would like to inform residents that the corporation will continue its efforts to negotiate a fair collective agreement with CUPE 1764. However, the union is in a legal strike position as of Friday, June 13 at 12:01 a.m.

The Region has contingency plans in place, which help to ensure that various services continue for our residents. These plans are designed to help avoid major disruptions to Regional programs and services.
