Fairview Lodge staff recognized with Accreditation Canada award

WHITBY, ON March 5, 2014 – Employees of Fairview Lodge, one of the Region’s long-term care homes, were honoured at Durham Regional Council today for earning an Accreditation Canada award with Exemplary Standing–the highest level of performance that an organization can achieve. In order to attain this award, Fairview Lodge staff demonstrated excellence in meeting the requirements of the accreditation program.

“On behalf of Regional Council, congratulations to staff at Fairview Lodge on this achievement,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “This coming year will definitely be a significant and exciting one for your home, as you prepare for the opening of a new building. By receiving this national recognition, residents, families and community members can feel confident in the high-quality services delivered at Fairview Lodge.”

This award follows the completion of the fourth official survey by Accreditation Canada for Fairview Lodge, with the first survey being completed in 2004, the second in 2007 and the third in 2010. The on-site accreditation survey was conducted for 2.5 days in November 2013. Staff hosted two surveyors from Accreditation Canada who met with a number of representatives, including health care partners, residents and their families, visitors, volunteers and staff members. The surveyors–peers in the long-term care sector–reviewed and validated the internal processes at the home to ensure that they complied with national Accreditation Canada standards. Policies and protocols were also assessed to confirm the home’s commitment to providing resident safety, and quality care and services.

Based upon the surveyors’ findings, Fairview Lodge achieved Accreditation with Exemplary Standing. Fairview previously earned a full award from Accreditation Canada in 2010. The next review is scheduled for 2017.

“This award exemplifies the leadership and dedication shown by Fairview Lodge staff each day,” said Dr. Hugh Drouin, Commissioner of Social Services. “You have once again demonstrated a commitment to patient safety and organizational excellence. For this, you should be very proud.”

“By undertaking the accreditation process and attaining the next level of accreditation, Fairview Lodge is maintaining the standards of care that the community has come to expect from our homes,” said Laura MacDermaid, Director of Long-Term Care and Services for Seniors. “Our employees strive to provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment for residents and their families–our partners in care.”

Fairview Lodge — one of four long-term care homes owned and operated by The Regional Municipality of Durham — sits on a 12-acre parcel of land, situated in the Town of Whitby. Fairview Lodge features 198 beds, including both semi-private and private, and offers 24-hour nursing care.

Currently, construction is underway on a new three-storey building on the site of Fairview Lodge. The new building will replace the existing home, with an anticipated completion date of this fall.
