Durham Region sets new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title at Durham Harvest Picnic

WHITBY, ON August 17, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department, Tourism Division, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Durham and Central Counties Tourism, has successfully broken the existing GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the Longest Picnic Table, previously set at 120.33 metres.

The Durham Harvest Picnic world record breaking attempt concluded at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, with a final, verified, measurement of the picnic table at Victoria Fields in Whitby. The event took place during the inaugural four-day Durham Festival, a celebration of Durham Region’s culture and creativity.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to all participants of this fun and collaborative challenge,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “The partnerships that were developed as a result of this successful challenge have been a tremendous support to the success of the Durham Festival.”

As part of the world record breaking attempt at the Durham Harvest Picnic, a picnic table was built to measure 136.61 metres and accommodate more than 500 people. Participating individuals attended with their lunch, pre-ordered or purchased a lunch on site, during this historic event. Following the verification of the success of challenging the record, the table was dismantled and all components donated to Habitat for Humanity Durham, for the outside framing of four townhouses in Oshawa.

“This past weekend, Durham Festival showcased Durham Region as a vibrant, creative and cultured tourism destination,” said Kathy Weiss, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. “We are pleased that the community responded so positively to the event, and we look forward to the future of the festival moving forward.”

Durham Festival is a region-wide celebration of creativity and culture presented by The Regional Municipality of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department, Tourism Division in partnership with all eight local area municipalities and Central Counties Tourism.
