News Release

Orono Main Street culvert replacement now complete

WHITBY, ON December 07, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department is pleased to report that the Main Street (Regional Road 17) culvert replacement project in Orono is complete.

“We’d like to thank the residents and businesses in Orono for their patience and understanding over the summer as we worked to improve infrastructure on Main Street,” says Susan Siopis, Director of Transportation and Field Services. “The street has now fully re-opened to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, and the creek valley has been restored and enhanced.”

The work included:

  • Replacing the existing deteriorated concrete culvert, built in approximately 1960, with an upgraded concrete structure. The new structure has a larger opening, for improved creek flow, which will minimize erosion of embankments and provide overall enhancement of wildlife habitat.
  • The new structure has a sidewalk on the west side for pedestrians, which is planned to be extended in the future.
  • A watermain extension, from north of the creek to Mill Street, for improved water distribution.

Detours had been in place since work began in early April. The road was officially re-opened on Nov. 19.
