Social Services Department honoured with prestigious Order of Excellence award

WHITBY, ON December 16, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Social Services Department was presented at Durham Regional Council today with the Order of Excellence by Excellence Canada. This award recognizes organizations who have previously received the Canada Awards for Excellence Gold Trophy, and who have successfully maintained a focus on excellence over the long-term. The Canada Awards for Excellence, Order of Excellence is the highest recognition an organization can achieve.

“On behalf of Regional Council, congratulations to the Social Services Department on this national recognition,” said Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer Roger Anderson. “You are leaders among your peers, and have consistently shown a commitment to continuous growth and development. Residents can be confident that they are receiving high-quality programs and services from this department.”

The Social Services Department received this prestigious award by demonstrating an ongoing commitment to excellence and continuous improvement, following the completion of Excellence Canada’s Progressive Excellence Program in 2012. This program has four levels of implementation. The Social Services Department obtained Level 1 in 2004; Level 2 in 2006; Level 3, along with the Silver Trophy, in 2009; and Level 4, and the Gold Trophy, in 2012.

To achieve this award, a detailed submission that demonstrated the department’s journey to excellence was submitted for review. Following a comprehensive review of the submission, an on-site verification—which included discussions with staff and the senior management team, as well as a tour of one of the Region’s long-term care homes—was completed by external, independent reviewers.

In order to maintain the Excellence Canada designation, the Social Services Department is required to complete a follow-up assessment every three years. This assessment will ensure that the department has sustained its commitment to excellence and position as a world-class organization.

“Through our 10-year partnership with Excellence Canada, we have built a framework with specific initiatives to constantly improve our programs and services,” said Dr. Hugh Drouin, Commissioner of Social Services. “This award is a testament to the dedication, skill and care that all of our 1,800 staff put forth every day. We have truly created a culture of excellence.”

The Canada Awards for Excellence, presented annually since 1984, recognizes outstanding performance and business excellence in the areas of quality, customer service and a healthy workplace. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada is the Patron of the Canada Awards for Excellence Program.
