News Release

Region to receive funding for costs related to 2013 ice storm

WHITBY, ON February 23, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham has been advised that an interim payment of about $525,000 will be received under Ontario’s Ice Storm Assistance Program, a fund designed to help municipalities cover costs related to the December 2013 ice storm.

This interim amount—which is about 35 per cent of the Region’s total claim of $1.5 million—is scheduled to be received within the next few months. It is important to note that these interim payments do not guarantee that the full amount will be received, as the province continues to review all claims/submissions.

In February 2014, the province announced that it would pay 100 per cent of eligible disaster response and recovery costs related to the December 2013 ice storm. Due to the severe nature of this storm, this one-time disaster relief program focused on costs related to immediate emergency response to ensure public safety.

The Region’s claim outlined costs related to several activities, including the pick up and disposal of downed trees and branches, unanticipated road maintenance (snow removal and salting), opening of warming centres (including food), and more.
