News Release

Business Count returns to Durham Region

WHITBY, ON May 06, 2015

Businesses in Durham Region should expect a knock on their door this spring/summer, as part of an annual Regional project to gather employment statistics and build a stronger local economy. The Regional Municipality of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department, is conducting its fourth Business Count—a survey of local businesses that gathers statistics about their operations.

Between May and August, the Region’s Business Count team is scheduled to visit each and every business establishment in Durham Region, to gather basic information about the type and nature of the company, the number of employees, plans for growth, floor space and location. The Business Count team will be recognizable by their navy blue Region of Durham shirts and photo ID cards.

“The valuable data collected via the Business Count allows us to improve the effective and efficient delivery of municipal services,” says Alex Georgieff, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development. “The information helps us monitor economic trends; develop business attraction and retention strategies; forecast infrastructure and service requirements; and plan transit services.”

Data collected will be used to update the www.investdurham.ca directory. Businesses are encouraged to utilize the online directory to “look local first” when seeking out new suppliers. Additionally, the data will be used by the area municipalities, which are partners in the project. All collected information will be kept confidential.

“Now in its fourth year, the Business Count has allowed us to promote, serve and enhance resources for Durham Region’s many unique businesses,” said Kathy Weiss, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. “We would like to sincerely thank the Durham business community for their continued co-operation in making this project a success.”

In addition to in-person visits, businesses also have the option to conveniently complete an online survey by visiting www.durham.ca/businesscount. Home businesses and farms are also encouraged to participate by completing the survey online.
