Hillsdale Estates staff recognized with accreditation award

WHITBY, ON September 23, 2015

Employees of Hillsdale Estates, one of the Region’s long-term care homes, were honoured at Durham Regional Council today for earning an Accreditation Canada award with Exemplary Standing—the highest level of performance that an organization can achieve. In order to attain this award, Hillsdale Estates staff demonstrated excellence in meeting the requirements of the accreditation program.

“On behalf of Regional Council, congratulations to staff of Hillsdale Estates on achieving this national achievement,” said Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer Roger Anderson. “This certification carries a high degree of respect within the health-care community. Residents and their families can feel confident that the Region’s long-term care homes are among the best, having all received Exemplary Standing.”

This award follows the completion of the fourth official survey by Accreditation Canada for Hillsdale Estates, with the first survey being completed in 2005, while Hillsdale Estates operated alongside Hillsdale Terraces; the second survey taking place in 2008; and the third in 2011.

The on-site accreditation survey was conducted for 3.5 days in June. Staff hosted two surveyors from Accreditation Canada who met with a number of representatives, including community partners, residents and their families, visitors, volunteers and staff members. The surveyors—health care professionals from accredited long-term care organizations—reviewed and validated the internal processes at the home from a quality improvement and risk management perspective. Policies and protocols were also assessed to confirm the home’s commitment to resident safety, and providing quality care and services.

During the review, the surveyors found a strong culture of caring; effective clinical leadership; vibrant activity programming; and staff and volunteers who are committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents.

“We are extremely proud of Hillsdale Estates’ staff on this accomplishment,” said Dr. Hugh Drouin, Commissioner of Social Services. “They have once again demonstrated their leadership and dedication to organizational excellence, while working in close partnership with residents, their families and members of the local community.”

“This award is a testament to the caring employees who provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment for residents and visitors each day,” said Laura MacDermaid, Director of Long-Term Care and Services for Seniors. “We will continue to undertake external assessments to ensure the sustained delivery of high-quality programs and services within all of our homes.”

The next review is scheduled for 2018, at which time all four of the Region’s long-term care homes, as well as the three Adult Day programs, will be surveyed jointly.

Hillsdale Estates—one of four long-term care homes owned and operated by The Regional Municipality of Durham—is situated in the City of Oshawa, overlooking 25 acres of beautiful park land. Hillsdale Estates features 300 beds, including both semi-private and private, and offers 24-hour nursing care.
