Regional Council accepts final recommendations from the Regional Council Composition Review Committee

WHITBY, ON March 09, 2016

Today, the Chair of the Regional Council Composition Review Committee, Dr. Tim McTiernan, presented the Committee’s final recommendations to Regional Council regarding the proposed composition of Durham Regional Council.

Regional Council accepted the final recommendations brought forward by the Committee, which included:

  • Retaining a 28-member Council.
  • Increasing the Town of Ajax’s Regional Councillor representation to four (from three).
  • Increasing the Town of Whitby’s Regional Councillor representation to five (from four).
  • Reducing the City of Oshawa’s Regional Councillor representation to six (from eight)

In order for these recommendations to be effective for the next council term in 2018, staff shall initiate the process set forth in section 218 of the Municipal Act, 2001.

“We have worked diligently over the past several months to carefully consider how to best represent the residents of Durham Region, fairly and effectively,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “Moving forward, we will review council composition on a regular basis to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our growing community.”

The Committee met eight times since July 2015, and hosted three public information sessions to allow residents to provide input about the size and composition of Durham Regional Council.

Representation on this special committee included the Regional Chair, one Regional Councillor from each area municipality (eight in total), and individuals from local chambers of commerce, boards of trade and post-secondary institutions.
