News Release

Outdoor water restrictions during Newtonville standpipe work

WHITBY, ON May 16, 2016

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department would like to advise residents and businesses that mandatory water restrictions on all non-essential outdoor water use for municipal water supply users in Newtonville, in the Municipality of Clarington, have been extended until July 6. These restrictions are required while staff perform maintenance and repair work on the Newtonville standpipe (a water storage facility).

Water restrictions were originally put in place from May 30 to June 23. The restrictions need to be extended to complete additional unforeseen coating repair work on the Newtonville standpipe.

While the work is underway, select hydrants may discharge or spout water; this is done to help control water pressure in the system.

Water use restrictions are necessary to maintain adequate water levels to deal with emergencies, including fire protection. Residents and businesses are requested to discontinue all non-essential outdoor water use. Examples of non-essential water use include cleaning driveways or decks, washing cars and lawn watering.

The Region of Durham regrets any inconvenience that this may cause and thanks customers for their co-operation. For water conservation tips please visit www.durham.ca/waterconservation, or call the Region of Durham's Technical Support Division at 905-668-7711 (toll-free 1-800-372-1102).
