Durham Region to host the 2019 Ontario Parasport Games

WHITBY, ON June 20, 2017

Today, Durham Region celebrated the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport’s recent announcement that the region will host the 2019 Ontario Parasport Games, during an event at the Abilities Centre in Whitby.

“Durham Region is honoured to have been selected as host of the 2019 Ontario Parasport Games. We are home to a diverse and passionate community that has been instrumental in paving the way toward making Durham Region an inclusive community. Together we will embrace this opportunity to bring the games to life,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer.

The 2019 Ontario Parasport Games will attract more than 260 athletes, competing in approximately 10 sports over the three-day event. It is estimated that the Ontario Parasport Games will help generate nearly $500,000 in economic activity in the region. The Region of Durham’s Sport Durham program will be working closely with the Games Organizing Committee to deliver a successful 2019 Ontario Parasport Games.

“For more than a decade, Durham Region has worked to achieve an inclusive and accessible environment; one that preserves dignity and independence for individuals of all abilities,” said Brian Bridgeman, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development. “As a result of this strong leadership, Sport Durham–in partnership with other community organizations and volunteers–has done a great job in bringing the 2019 Ontario Parasport Games to Durham.”

Durham Region is a premier sport tourism destination, home to some of the GTA’s best and busiest sporting complexes and venues. A sports-minded, active community, the region has an impressive resumé of hosting sport events, from large international events, to numerous community-based sport tournaments.

The 2019 Games will be the fourth time Durham Region has hosted an Ontario games. Previously, successful Ontario Summer Games were held in Oshawa in 2000; the Ontario 55+ Summer Games, held in Oshawa, in 2010; and the Ontario Parasport Games, also held in Oshawa, in 1979.

Durham Region sits at the eastern gateway of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), in the highly developed and populated economic centre of Ontario, known as the Golden Horseshoe, which stretches from Oshawa to Niagara Falls. Durham Region is made up of eight municipalities ranging from large urban centres to rural townships. These eight municipalities include the cities of Oshawa and Pickering; the towns of Ajax and Whitby; the Municipality of Clarington; and the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge.

Sport Durham is a program of the Region’s Economic Development and Tourism Division. The program celebrates all the reasons that Durham Region is a great place to stay and play.
