Region of Durham Participates in Imagine a Day Without Water

WHITBY, ON October 04, 2017

Durham Regional Council has proclaimed October 12, as Imagine a Day Without Water. The campaign is part of a nationwide day of education and advocacy to recognize the true value of water, organized by The Value of Water Coalition. It not only tells the stories of the challenges we face when our water infrastructure fails, but also of the innovative solutions to these challenges, being implemented in communities nationwide.

The hidden infrastructure in Durham Region, that reliably brings clean water to homes and businesses, and takes it away after it has been used are showing the effects of a century, or more, of running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The challenges our drinking water and wastewater systems face are multi-faceted. Flooding, infrastructure failure, age and climate change are just a few of the issues stressing our water and wastewater systems.

“The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness about the crucial need for investment in water infrastructure systems,” said John Presta, Director of Environmental Services. “There are challenges affecting our aging water infrastructure, which require investment and planning. Continued investment in our drinking water and wastewater systems is essential to secure a reliable and safe resource for generations to come.”

This is the Value of Water Coalition’s third annual Imagine a Day Without Water. The Coalition is co-ordinated by the US Water Alliance, a national non-profit dedicated to securing a sustainable water future for all. For more information about the Imagine a Day Without Water campaign, visit:
