Durham Region to host e-waste collection event in Brock

WHITBY, ON September 3, 2013 – The Regional Municipality of Durham, in partnership with Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES), is inviting residents to drop off their end-of-life or unwanted electronics (e-waste) for free recycling at an upcoming collection event. Items collected will be sent to an approved processor and valuable commodities such as steel, aluminium, copper, glass and plastic will be melted or processed as raw materials for future production.

WHEN:

The e-waste collection event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. to noon.

WHERE:

Cannington Community Arena, 91 Elliot St., Cannington

WHY:

To provide Durham residents with a convenient, free collection service to properly recycle their electronics, while keeping toxic materials out of landfill. Acceptable items include, but are not limited to: cellular phones, audio and video players, VCRs and DVD players, stereos and receivers, computer peripherals, printing devices, televisions, personal digital assistants and pagers, cameras and radios, telephones, desktop computers, monitors, camcorders and portable computers. Residents are reminded to erase their hard drives in order to delete sensitive or personal information before bringing their computers for recycling.

NOTE:

Residents can also drop off e-waste items at any of the following Durham Region Waste Management Facilities during regular hours of operation, from Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding statutory holidays:

Loads containing only e-waste will be accepted free of charge. Loads containing other waste will be charged standard disposal fees. The Region also provides curbside e-waste collection for residents living in Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge by appointment only. Call 1-800-667-5671 to schedule an appointment. Residents are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to a local food bank.
