The Region of Durham reminds residents to re-stock emergency kits

WHITBY, ON February 10, 2014 – Emergencies can happen quickly and without warning, meaning personal preparedness is essential. The Regional Municipality of Durham, Emergency Management Office (DEMO) is reminding residents that following the recent winter weather, it is important to re-stock family and vehicle emergency kits.

WHEN:

As soon as possible.

WHERE:

Family emergency kits, including first-aid kits, should be stored in an area of the home that is accessible to all household members.

WHY:

Family emergency kits should include items such as flashlights; a battery or crank-operated radio; cash; non-perishable food; small tool kit; candles/matches; and a change of clothing (weather specific).

Vehicle emergency kits should include items such as booster cables, a blanket and a fire extinguisher. During the winter months, these kits should also include items such as a shovel, salt, ice scraper, warm clothing and candles/matches.

For a checklist of emergency kit items, refer to DEMO's "Are You Ready" brochure online at www.durham.ca/demo. Copies are also available by contacting DEMO at 905-430-2792.

NOTE:

Education and preparedness are the best defence in dealing with any type of emergency situation. The Region reminds residents, particularly those with disabilities, to follow the Region's social media channels during an emergency.

Knowing where to find accurate and timely information is an important part of personal preparedness. Residents can learn more by connecting with the Region's social media channels by following these links: www.facebook.com/regionofdurham and www.twitter.com/regionofdurham.
