Durham Region reminds residents to be prepared for emergencies this spring

WHITBY, ON March 24, 2014 – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Emergency Management Office (DEMO) reminds residents to be prepared for emergency situations this spring, such as the potential for flooding caused by melting snow or heavy rains.

WHEN:

Emergencies can happen at any time, so it's important that you and your family are always ready.

WHERE:

Emergency preparedness for you and your loved ones begins at home.

WHY:

Education and preparedness are your best defence for reducing the impact of an emergency situation. The Region and its local area municipalities have emergency plans and programs in place. However, your own disaster planning is also essential.

Residents are encouraged to restock their at-home emergency kit after the winter months. For more details about what should be included in your kit, or additional information related to emergency preparedness, please visit www.durham.ca/demo. To receive a free copy of the "Are You Ready" brochure, which contains valuable tips on personal preparedness, call DEMO at 905-430-2792, or download it at www.durham.ca/demo, under the "Helpful Brochures" area.

NOTE:

For additional resources and information about local flooding, visit www.durham.ca/demo, under the "Need more information?" link.

During an emergency, residents are reminded to follow the Region's social media channels at www.facebook.com/regionofdurham and/or www.twitter.com/regionofdurham, or the Region's website at www.durham.ca.
