WHITBY, ON September 02, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department, invites residents to drop off their end-of-life or unwanted Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment (WEEE) for free recycling at an upcoming collection event. Items collected will be sent to an approved processor and valuable commodities such as steel, aluminum, copper, glass and plastic will be melted or processed as raw materials for future production.

WHEN:

Saturday, Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine

WHERE:

Cannington Arena, 91 Elliot St., Cannington

WHY:

To provide Durham residents with a convenient, free collection event to properly recycle their electronics and keep toxic materials out of the waste stream. Acceptable items include, but are not limited to: cellular phones, audio and video players, VCRs and DVD players, stereos and receivers, computer peripherals, printing devices, televisions, personal digital assistants and pagers, cameras and radios, telephones, desktop computers, monitors, camcorders and portable computers. Residents are reminded to erase hard drives and SIM cards in order to delete personal information before bringing their electronics for recycling.

NOTE:

Residents are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to a local food bank. Please remember to check the expiration dates on food items donated.

Residents can also drop off WEEE items at any of Durham Region’s Waste Management Facilities during regular hours of operation; loads containing only e-waste will be accepted free of charge. The Region also provides curbside WEEE collection for residents living in Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Pickering, Scugog and Uxbridge. Call 1-800-667-5671 to schedule an appointment.
