Durham Region seeks municipal member for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA)

WHITBY, ON June 14, 2017

The Regional Municipality of Durham is seeking applications from individuals residing in the Region—who are interested in being nominated—to serve as Durham’s municipal member on the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) Board of Directors.

There is an opening for one new director; the position will commence in October of 2017. This individual will serve until May 2018, followed by possible renewal terms of up to three years each (nine years total).

The GTAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation that manages and operates Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Directors must possess the skills and expertise to oversee GTAA’s complex commercial business, and owe the duties of care and loyalties to the GTAA (as those of any other corporate director). Please note that remuneration is determined, and paid, by the GTAA.

The GTAA by-law outlines qualifications/requirements for potential candidates, such as:

  • Candidates must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of at least 18 years of age.
  • During the two-year period before the start date, candidates cannot have served as elected officials at the federal, provincial or municipal levels, or have been a Senate of Canada member.
  • Within two years before the appointment, candidates cannot have worked for or provided full-time services to any federal, provincial or municipal government, agency or the GTAA; nor be a shareholder of a related GTAA subsidiary.

Candidates with the following additional qualifications and public company experience as a senior executive (CEO, CFO, etc.), or as a board director, are preferred:

  • Public company finance and capital markets experience.
  • Large-scale commercial retail and office management.
  • Urban intermodal transportation systems and connectivity, including large scale, complex infrastructure management.
  • Demonstrated community involvement in the Region of Durham.
  • Ability to devote the required time during normal business hours, as well as evening hours, to attend board, committee and public meetings.
  • Other specific knowledge or experience which may be an asset to the board.
