Durham Region EMS celebrates National Emergency Medical Services Week, May 19 to 25

WHITBY, ON May 15, 2013 –Durham Region Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will mark National Emergency Medical Services Week, May 19 to 25, by inviting the community to an open house at EMS headquarters, 4040 Anderson St., Whitby on May 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Celebrating the national theme, “EMS – Health Care in Motion”, the week will provide an opportunity to acknowledge the essential service provided by over 300 paramedics who respond to more than 89,000 requests annually, for out-of-hospital emergency medical care and emergency support across Durham Region.

“If you’ve ever wondered what happens if you need to call paramedics, this open house will provide a great opportunity to learn what to expect,” said Dave Mokedanz, Superintendent, Quality and Development for Durham Region EMS. “Area residents are invited to drop by, check out the equipment and watch as paramedics demonstrate their skills and expertise on the training mannequins that are used as part of paramedic education.”

An added feature of the open house will include a display of McIntosh-Anderson-Kellam Funeral Home’s Oshawa built 1933 McLaughlin/Buick ambulance. This vintage ambulance will be on display along with a variety of other modern-day vehicles used by Durham Region EMS.

In addition to the open house, local paramedics will host a display at the Oshawa Centre on May 21 during regular mall hours. Residents are invited to visit the display and interact with paramedics. Also on the same day, a number of Durham Region paramedics will join EMS teams from other GTA municipalities in a display at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Durham Region EMS is a division of Durham Region Health Department. As one of the largest paramedic services in Ontario, Durham Region EMS is the sole certified ambulance operator for the Region of Durham. The service is made up of a team of advanced care and primary care paramedics who operate out of 10 paramedic stations located across the Region.
