Get active this May long weekend by enjoying some free, local activities

WHITBY, ON May 12, 2014 - Durham Region Health Department is encouraging residents to get active this May long weekend and all summer using a new online resource that includes links to free activities within the community.

“The May long weekend often marks the beginning of summer fun for many people and brings to mind fond memories of summers spent enjoying time with family and friends,” explained Mary June Peacock, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “What better way to enjoy the company of others than to get outdoors and be physically active together.”

The Health Department developed this new web resource to encourage area residents to become more physically active. “We hope to inspire residents to try something new that’s fun, free and all within their community,” said Ms. Peacock. “The web resource provides links for easy access to activities within the community and will be updated each season.”

According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, most people are not getting enough physical activity for health benefits. Children and youth require at least 60-minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per day, while adults require at least 150-minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week.

To see a list of free physical activities in your community, or for other helpful resources call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729.
