Health Department announces 2014 Healthy Workplace Award recipients

WHITBY, ON February 10, 2015

Durham Region Health Department has presented the 2014 Healthy Workplace Award to 19 workplaces, recognizing these organizations for their role in influencing the health and wellbeing of their employees. Workplaces are awarded for focusing on at least one of the following health topics in a comprehensive manner: healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco-free living, sun safety, and alcohol and cancer screening. Some workplaces also received awards in multiple categories.

Awards are presented to workplaces that plan health-related activities throughout the year to help employees learn more about how to make healthy choices. Awards are determined in three levels – gold, silver and bronze. Workplaces that receive an award are acknowledged for ensuring that their work environment is supportive of health, as well as having policies that support healthy practices at work.

“This year we have added a new component to the award process,” explained Georgette Chambers, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “Workplaces that use additional strategies to ensure a healthy workplace may apply for honours recognition. These strategies include: the development of a health plan, completing an employee survey, evaluating the health plan, working with an assigned public health nurse and completing an assessment.

“Adults spend about half of their waking hours at work, so the workplace has a huge impact on the health of employees,” said Ms. Chambers. “The winners of this award have shown dedication to health and wellness initiatives in their workplace to support their employees.”
