Learn tips to eat healthy on the go this Nutrition Month

WHITBY, ON February 26, 2015

March is Nutrition Month and Durham Region Health Department is launching the campaign, “March into Nutrition Month…Take small steps to healthier eating”, encouraging residents to eat healthier by making small changes throughout the day. This year’s focus is to address the challenges of eating healthy on busy work and school days.

“We know that it can be difficult to eat healthy when you’re faced with a busy day,” explained Adrienne Baltadjian, a public health nutritionist with the Health Department. “The key to addressing these challenges is to take some time to plan and prepare quick yet healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks in advance.”

Healthy snacks include at least two of the four food groups found in Canada’s Food Guide, while healthy meals should include at least three food groups. “Making one of these food groups a vegetable or fruit at each meal and snack will help you to meet the number of servings as recommended in the Food Guide”, said Ms. Baltadjian.

According to the Food Guide, adults need between seven to 10 servings of vegetables and fruit each day, teens 14 to 18-years old need seven to eight servings and children, depending on age and gender, should have four to six servings every day. Increased vegetable and fruit consumption is associated with a decreased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and some cancers, and is also linked to a healthy body weight. However, the most recent report from the Canadian Community Health Survey found that only 34 per cent of Durham Region residents 12 and older ate vegetables and fruit five or more times each day day.
