Increase your physical activity this summer starting with National Health and Fitness Day

WHITBY, ON June 03, 2016 - Durham Region Health Department is encouraging residents to get physically active this National Health and Fitness Day, June 4, and all throughout the summer months. This initiative aims to improve the health and well-being of all Canadians by encouraging them to get fit and be active.

“Being physically active has many proven health benefits. It can help to lower your risk for some chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancers,” said Aliya Desai, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “It can also help you sleep better, relieve stress, feel motivated, as well as many other benefits.”

According to Active Healthy Kids Canada, the majority of Canadians find it difficult to find the time to be physically active. In addition, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology indicates children require 60 minutes of heart-pumping physical activity per day and adults require 150 minutes per week.

“National Health and Fitness Day is a good starting point to get active this season. Residents are encouraged to check their local municipalities for listings of free fitness activities and events,” explained Ms. Desai. “We hope residents use this opportunity to get physically active and gradually look for ways to increase their activity throughout the summer.

“One way that residents can be active this month is by participating in Bike Month which runs until June 30. We hope that with the warm weather, people will spend more time outdoors,” added Ms. Desai. “A great way to spend time being active is by cycling, rolling on a scooter or walking with your kids to school. This not only helps to reduce traffic and improve air quality, but it helps keep your family active.”

In July, the Health Department will launch the 30 Days of Outdoor Play, a social media contest encouraging residents to try different activities that fit easily into their everyday life. Residents can participate for a chance to win outdoor physical activity kits that can help everyone be active when outdoors this summer.
