Durham Region Health Department recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

WHITBY, ON October 10, 2017 - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Durham Region Health Department is encouraging women over 50 to get screened regularly for breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among females in Ontario.

“Regular screening can find breast cancer earlier, when there are more treatment options and an improved chance of survival,” explained Cathie Snider, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “Most cases of breast cancer are found in women 50 and older, with most women having no family history of the disease. There are often no early warning symptoms of breast cancer, which is why regular screenings for breast cancer should be done, even when you feel healthy and have no symptoms.”

Women can be screened through the province-wide Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP). Average-risk women, between 50 and 74-years old, can be screened with mammography every two years. A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray of the breast that looks for tumors or any breast changes. It can also find changes in the breast, even when they are too small for you or your healthcare provider to feel or see.

In addition to the OBSP, Cancer Care Ontario offers the Colon Cancer Screening Program for men and women over 50-years old every two years and the Cervical Cancer Screening Program for women between 21 and 69-years old every three years. Cancer Care Ontario also hosts MyCancerIQ.ca, a website that provides people with an individualized risk assessment and personal recommendations to help reduce the risk of cancer.
