Health Department receives highest level of accreditation from Accreditation Canada

WHITBY, ON October 31, 2017 - Durham Region Health Department has been accredited with Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada, which is the highest level of accreditation that can be achieved. This means that the Health Department has met 95 per cent or more high priority criteria and a number of other important organizational requirements. As a result of this decision, the Health Department will be accredited until October 2021.

“I’m delighted to share news of this significant achievement with our community,” said Dr. Robert Kyle, Commissioner & Medical Officer of Health for Durham Region. “This award recognizes the efforts and commitment of all Health Department staff in providing safe, high quality health services for all residents of Durham Region.”

From Oct. 2 to 5, Accreditation Canada surveyors were on-site accessing eight of the Health Department’s locations across the Region. The surveyors’ assessment included observation of procedures and services to clients, a review of documents, and interviews with numerous staff members, clients and community partners.

In the surveyors’ report, it was noted that the Health Department achieved high marks in a number of organizational standards including:

  • Public Health Services.
  • Paramedic Services and Inter-facility Transport.
  • Medication Management Standards for Community-based Organizations.
  • Infection Prevention and Control Standards for Community-Based Organizations.
  • Leadership Standards for Small, Community-Based Organizations.

Durham Region Health Department is responsible for the delivery of provincial-mandated public health services, paramedic services and related programs for the residents of Durham Region. The Health Department is accountable to Durham Regional Council, and also to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services for related legislations, policies and provincial acts.

Accreditation Canada provides an external peer review process to access and improve services based on standards of excellence. As a not-for-profit, independent organization, Accreditation Canada accredits more than 1,000 health care and social services organizations in Canada and around the world.
