Durham Region to release report outlining a preferred vendor for a proposed energy-from-waste facility

WHITBY, ON April 9, 2009 – Members of the media are advised that a report recommending the selection of a preferred vendor for the proposed energy-from-waste facility will be presented to a joint Durham Region Works/Finance & Administration Committee meeting on April 14.

WHEN:

Tuesday, April 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

WHERE:

The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters, 605 Rossland Rd. E., Whitby, Council Chambers

WHY:

To review a report about the selection of a preferred vendor for a proposed energy-from-waste facility.

NOTE:

Durham Regional Council will review this report during its regularly scheduled meeting on April 22.

On Feb. 19, submissions were received from four of the five pre-qualified vendors. These proposals were evaluated from Feb. 19 to March 31 by an evaluation committee consisting of representatives from the Durham Finance, Durham Works and York Works departments, technical consultants and financial consultants. The committee recommended a preferred vendor to negotiate a final design, build operate agreement with, and for the execution of an early works agreement with said vendor in order to complete the environmental assessment and architectural renderings. A final decision regarding the execution of an agreement to design, build and operate the proposed energy-from-waste facility will not be made by Regional Council until June 2009.

A copy of the report will be posted on the Region's website (www.durham.ca) and on the study website (www.durhamyorkwaste.ca). Printed copies of the report will be available at noon today in the Regional Clerk's office at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby.

Since 2005, Durham and York Regions have been working together to examine ways to manage residual waste-the waste that remains after composting and recycling. The Environmental Assessment's next steps include the final site- and technology-specific studies.
