Additional energy-from-waste site-specific studies to be released

WHITBY, ON  May 7, 2009 – The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to notify residents that several site-specific studies related to the energy-from-waste (EFW) project will be available for viewing on May 11. These documents will be included with the Environmental Assessment (EA) when it is submitted to the province (scheduled for this June).

After the selection of a recommended preferred vendor, and the specific technology for the proposed EFW facility, next steps in the EA included site- and technology-specific studies. These reports build upon the four site-specific studies released in February, which characterized environmental conditions in the area.

Studies to be released include those that outline impact assessments for noise and vibration, traffic, visual elements, socioeconomic, energy and surface/storm water.

Copies of these reports will be available on the Region's website (www.durham.ca) and on the study website (www.durhamyorkwaste.ca). Printed copies will be available in the Clerk's Department at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby.

Since 2005, Durham and York Regions have been working together to examine ways to manage residual waste—the waste that remains after composting and recycling.
