Region submits its accessibility compliance report
WHITBY, ON March 31, 2010 - Residents are invited to review The Regional Municipality of Durham's Customer Service Accessibility Compliance Report (PDF), which outlines the steps undertaken by Regional staff to make programs and services more accessible for individuals living with disabilities. Please note that this report was mandated under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.
The Customer Service Accessibility Compliance Report was submitted to the Ministry of Community and Social Services on March 29. All business or organizations that provide goods or services to the public were required to file their first accessibility report by March 31.
Residents may review a copy of the report on the home page of the Region's website at www.durham.ca.
This report outlines the steps taken by staff to help further eliminate barriers within Regional facilities. This includes staff-wide accessibility training, which outlined effective customer service and the different types of disability and functional limitations, not just those that are visible.
The Region of Durham implemented its first Accessibility Plan in 2003. Since that time, barriers have been removed by incorporating accessible ramps, lowering reception counters, installing automatic doors, and redeveloping the Region's website (to meet accessibility guidelines). Moving forward, consideration will be given to enhancing existing signage (to make it more clear and readable) and introducing audible elevator cues.
The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 made Ontario the first jurisdiction in Canada to develop, implement and enforce mandatory accessibility standards in both the public and private sectors. There are currently about 1.85 million people in Ontario who have a disability.
The Accessibility Standards for Customer Service became law on Jan. 1, 2008. To learn more, please visit www.mcss.gov.on.ca/en/mcss/programs/accessibility/index.aspx.
