Durham Region now accepting nominations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal Program
WHITBY, ON June 28, 2012 – Through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the Government of Canada is inviting municipalities to nominate a citizen who has made an exceptional contribution to his/her community for a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. As such, The Regional Municipality of Durham, Office of the Regional Chair and Chief Administrative Officer is now inviting Durham residents to submit the name of a candidate for consideration.
“The Government of Canada is offering municipalities a unique opportunity to celebrate the people who helped build our local communities, including those here in Durham Region,” said Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer Roger Anderson. “The Diamond Jubilee presents an occasion to celebrate our nation’s rich traditions, history and values, made possible through the outstanding contributions of local residents.”
A new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. It also serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. During the year of celebrations, 60,000 deserving Canadians will be recognized.
The deadline for submitting the name of your candidate to the Region of Durham is July 20. The chosen Durham candidate (and one alternate) will then be submitted by Durham Region to FCM.
To be eligible for this honour, a person:
- Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, but need not necessarily reside in Canada.
- Must have made a significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada, or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.
- Must have been alive on Feb. 6, 2012. The medal can be awarded posthumously, as long as the recipient was alive on that date.
The nomination form can be downloaded at www.durham.ca/DiamondJubileeNomination, and completed forms should be submitted as an attachment via email to cao@durham.ca.
