Region of Durham installing additional public alerting sirens in the City of Pickering

WHITBY, ON January 22, 2013 – Durham Region is commencing the installation of 11 additional public alerting sirens in the three-kilometre area around the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.

WHEN:

Installation work will commence this week.

WHERE:

The public alerting sirens will be installed in the three-kilometre area around the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in the City of Pickering.

WHY:

The sirens are required in order to meet the provincial sound level requirements for alerting.

The Public Alerting System provides a means of warning residents, indoors or outdoors, in the highly unlikely event of a nuclear emergency at either the Pickering or Darlington nuclear generating stations.
