Tentative deal reached; possible end to labour disruption

WHITBY, ON July 08, 2014

The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to advise residents that—with the assistance of mediator Gerry Lee—a tentative deal has been reached with CUPE Local 1764. Please note that the members of CUPE Local 1764 still need to ratify this agreement, during a vote on Tuesday, July 8.

If the membership accepts this tentative deal, the agreement will then need to be approved by Regional Council, during a special meeting to be held later this week. Once accepted by council, the approximately 1,600 unionized employees could then be back at work as early as Friday, July 11.

CUPE Local 1764 has been on strike as of Thursday, June 19 at 6 a.m. This is the union that represents about 1,600 Regional employees (also known as our “inside workers”), who provide services in the areas of child care, income support, court services, public health inspections, traffic operations, paramedical services (paramedics) and more.
