Council approves new collective agreement; employees to return on Friday

WHITBY, ON July 10, 2014

The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to advise residents that Durham Regional Council has approved the tentative agreement that was reached on July 8 and ratified by the membership on July 9. This means that employees within CUPE Local 1764 will return to work July 11 (tomorrow).

“We look forward to our employees returning to work; delivering programs and services that make our community one of the best in Ontario,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “This agreement is a win-win, because it allows our high-quality programs and services to resume and was negotiated with taxpayer affordability in mind.”

As a result of this decision by Regional Council, programs and services will return to normal operations tomorrow. After all, this is the union that represents about 1,600 Regional employees (also known as our “inside workers”), who provide services in the areas of child care, income support, court services, public health inspections, traffic operations, paramedical services (paramedics) and more.

Please note that the Region’s six directly operated child-care centres will open on Monday, July 14. The Sunderland Early Learning and Child Care Centre will resume services in the fall, as previously scheduled.
