Durham Region receives national Economic Development Achievement of the Year Award

WHITBY, ON October 07, 2014

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department, received the prestigious EDAC / RBC Royal Bank Economic Development Achievement of the Year Award during the 2014 Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC) Marketing Canada Awards. The award was received on behalf of the Uxbridge BIA, Township of Uxbridge, Business Advisory Centre Durham and Region of Durham for the Win This Space project.

“This is an outstanding honour, and staff should be very proud of this accomplishment,” said Township of Uxbridge Mayor Gerri-Lynn O’Connor, Chair of the Planning & Economic Development Committee. “Congratulations to those involved in Win This Space, and special thanks to the Uxbridge BIA who led the project. It was a great initiative for Uxbridge and showcased the exceptional talent, ideas and community spirit in our town.”

Each year EDAC, in partnership with RBC Royal Bank, presents this award to one community-driven economic development project that has demonstrated innovation, creativity and proven results. Win This Space was a unique competition that encouraged entrepreneurs to submit their business ideas, for the opportunity to win the first year’s lease of a commercial storefront in downtown Uxbridge. The prize also included a range of support in the form of printing, advertising and business coaching from the Small Business Centre.

Win This Space gave us the opportunity to recognize creative and inspiring entrepreneurs in Durham Region,” said Kathy Weiss, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. “Through this project, we were able to show our dedication to further developing new business and growth in our downtown areas. We are thrilled to celebrate the success of this project and see it propelling local entrepreneurship forward in the coming years.”

EDAC is Canada's national organization of economic development professionals. The Marketing Canada awards competition is open to those organizations that promote and market Canadian provinces, territories, regions, cities, towns and areas with a view to improving the economic well-being of Canadians. The 2014 awards were handed out during the EDAC’s 46th annual conference, held in Calgary, Alberta on Sept. 30.
