Hillsdale Terraces staff recognized with Accreditation Canada award

WHITBY, ON September 17, 2014

Employees of Hillsdale Terraces, one of the Region’s long-term care homes, were honoured at Durham Regional Council today for earning an Accreditation Canada award with Exemplary Standing—the highest level of performance that an organization can achieve. In order to attain this award, Hillsdale Terraces staff demonstrated excellence in meeting the requirements of the accreditation program.

“On behalf of Regional Council, congratulations to staff at Hillsdale Terraces on this achievement,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “This award carries a high degree of respect among the national health-care community, and shows the home’s continued dedication to organizational excellence and patient safety. Residents, families and members of the local community can feel confident in the care being delivered at Hillsdale Terraces.”

This award follows the completion of the fourth official survey by Accreditation Canada for Hillsdale Terraces, with the first survey being completed in 2005, while Hillsdale Terraces operated alongside Hillsdale Estates; the second survey taking place in 2008; and the third in 2011.

The on-site accreditation survey was conducted for 2.5 days in May. Staff hosted two surveyors from Accreditation Canada who met with a number of representatives, including health care partners, residents and their families, visitors, volunteers and staff members. The surveyors—peers in the long-term care sector—reviewed and validated the internal processes at the home to ensure that they complied with Accreditation Canada standards. Policies and protocols were also assessed to confirm the home’s commitment to resident safety, and providing quality care and services.

Based upon the surveyors’ findings, Hillsdale Terraces achieved Accreditation with Exemplary Standing. The next review is scheduled for 2018.

“Staff at Hillsdale Terraces should be very proud of this accomplishment,” said Dr. Hugh Drouin, Commissioner of Social Services. “It is an example of the leadership, hard work, and dedication to continuous improvement that you demonstrate each day.”

“By attaining the next level of accreditation, Hillsdale Terraces has shown its commitment to upholding the standards of care that the community has come to expect from our long-term care homes,” stated Laura MacDermaid, Director of Long-Term Care and Services for Seniors. “We will continue to work in close partnership with our families and community, ensuring a safe, secure and welcoming environment at the home.”

Hillsdale Terraces—one of four long-term care homes owned and operated by The Regional Municipality of Durham—is situated in the City of Oshawa, overlooking 25 acres of beautiful park land. Hillsdale Terraces features 200 beds, including both semi-private and private, and offers 24-hour nursing care.
