Durham Region Works Department wins Bruce Brunton Award

WHITBY, ON September 24, 2014

Today, The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department was presented with the Ontario Public Works Association’s (OPWA) Bruce Brunton Award for National Public Works Week (NPWW) 2013 by Deborah Korolnek, President-Elect of the Ontario Public Works Association.

“Receiving this award is an outstanding honour,” said Cliff Curtis, Commissioner of Works for the Region of Durham. “During National Public Works Week, residents young and old come out to celebrate and learn about the importance of public works.  Thank you to all the residents who participate in NPWW and help make it an annual success.”

NPWW takes place each year during the third week of May across North America. The aim of NPWW is to inform and engage residents about the importance and impact of public works. Durham Region celebrates NPWW each year with community events such as open houses and tours; displays at local malls; workshops; social media engagement and more.

“I am proud to present Durham with the prestigious Bruce Brunton Award,” said Deborah Korolnek, President-Elect of the Ontario Public Works Association. “The level of effort that the Region of Durham put forth in showcasing National Public Works Week was outstanding. Durham clearly shows the lasting impact that public works programs have on the local environment and the daily lives of people in the community.”

NPWW awards are given to recognize the efforts of Ontario municipalities who participate in the week-long event. Two awards are presented each year by the OPWA, the Roger Brown Award for municipalities with a population of 150,000 or less and the Bruce Brunton Award for municipalities with a population of more than 150,000. Durham Region was also honoured with the Bruce Brunton Award for its 2011 National Public Works Week campaign.
