New branding hopes to attract new investors

WHITBY, ON June 10, 2014 – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department hosted the official launch of its new branding, during a special event at Regional Headquarters last night.

"Branding is the foundation of successful marketing; it is the way in which investors identify why this region is a great place to invest," said Kathy Weiss, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. "These new materials–available in both print and electronic formats–are made up of contemporary and innovative pieces that will help us to stand out within increasingly competitive markets, both locally and abroad."

At the core of this new brand is a unique, D-shaped Economic Development logo–in blue and green–that reflects the urban/rural mix that makes Durham Region so unique. Plus, the bright tones represent our dynamic, innovative and energetic region.

The branding package includes 10 marketing pieces, including sector brochures that identify the four key economic sectors (Advanced Manufacturing, Smart Energy, Digital Technology and Agri-food); outlining key strengths for location, infrastructure, post-secondary education, labour force, development readiness, etc. Plus, a 24-page community profile gives readers a general overview of the economic condition of the Region, and factors that influence development.

Another powerful marketing tool is the newly designed website; www.investdurham.ca makes clear to investors why Durham Region's land, location, people, infrastructure and balanced living opportunities are the clear choice for investment. There's also a three-minute video that showcases Durham's ideal location; transportation infrastructure; post-secondary institutions; labour force; major infrastructure investment; and the four key economic sectors. Plus, this fall, the website is scheduled to include an online business directory.

Outside of this major branding, the event also marked the official launch of the logo for Sport Tourism, a pilot program approved by Regional Council in June 2013. This logo uses sweeping lines that reflect motion; a concept that can be tailored to a specific event or activity, while maintaining brand consistency.
