Collective bargaining update

WHITBY, ON June 12, 2014 – The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to update residents, with regards to our ongoing negotiations with CUPE Local 1764. The union is in a legal strike position as of Friday, June 13 at 12:01 a.m.

Residents are advised that earlier today, the union informed its members that 48 hours' notice would be given before any strike action would occur.

The Region remains committed to negotiating a fair collective agreement between the Region and CUPE 1764 and is doing everything possible to achieve this. CUPE Local 1764 is the union that represents about 1,600 Regional employees (also known as our "inside workers"), who provide services in the areas of child care, income support, court services, public health inspections, traffic operations, paramedical services (paramedics) and more.

In the event of a labour disruption, residents are reminded that the Region has contingency plans in place, which help to ensure that various services continue.
