News Release

Labour disruption could begin on Thursday

WHITBY, ON June 16, 2014 – The Regional Municipality of Durham would like to advise residents that CUPE Local 1764 has given notice that a labour disruption (strike) will commence on Thursday, June 19 at 6 a.m., provided an agreement cannot be reached between the two parties.

The Region had tried to negotiate a fair collective agreement with CUPE Local 1764. This is the union that represents about 1,600 Regional employees (also known as our "inside workers"), who provide services in the areas of child care, income support, court services, public health inspections, traffic operations, paramedical services (paramedics) and more. The majority of these individuals are based at Regional Headquarters.

The Region has contingency plans in place, which help to ensure that various services continue for our residents. These plans are designed to help avoid major disruptions to Regional programs and services.

Notifications, related to Regional programs and/or services, will be available via the website at www.durham.ca/strike and on our social media accounts of Twitter (@regionofdurham) and Facebook (regionofdurham).
