Durham Region celebrates Carpool Week April 20 to 26

WHITBY, ON April 17, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham is encouraging commuters to save money and the environment by sharing vehicle rides in celebration of Carpool Week, April 20 to 26.

“Whether commuting into a neighbouring municipality, driving to the train station or travelling to your workplace within Durham—carpooling saves you money, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves local traffic flow,” says Alex Georgieff, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development.

Carpooling involves two or more people sharing a ride. Specific arrangements may vary from rotating drivers or a single driver, to one or more days a week. Carpoolers can save money on fuel and car maintenance, plus reduce stress by sharing the responsibility of driving.

This year, carpooling is more beneficial than ever as local municipalities within Durham gear up to host  several events for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. As part of its transportation plan, the Province of Ontario will be implementing high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes (also known as carpool lanes) on 400-series highways across the Greater Toronto Area, including on Highway 401 in Ajax and Pickering, from June 29 to Aug. 18. “Smart Commute’s online ride-matching service makes finding a carpool partner easy,” says Sandra McEleney, Planning Analyst for Durham Region. “We encourage commuters to find a carpool buddy now so they are ready to take advantage of the special carpool lanes during the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games this summer.”

Smart Commute Durham, a program of Metrolinx, offers services to help commuters start a carpool, take transit, cycle, walk or telework. To get started, use the new online tool at www.smartcommute.ca, where you can explore your options, match your trip with others and track your trips. Businesses can take advantage of a new, free service to support the development and implementation of Games Travel Plans. Learn more at www.smartcommute.ca/gamesservice.
