Regional Council approves 2016 water and sewer user rates

WHITBY, ON December 17, 2015

Durham Regional Council has approved the 2016 water and sanitary sewer user rates, with a combined increase of five per cent, or approximately $43 per year for the average Durham Region household. Effective Jan. 1, 2016, water rates will increase by 5.6 per cent, and sanitary sewer user rates will increase by 4.4 per cent.

“With these user rates, Durham Regional Council has ensured the Region of Durham will continue to provide reliable water and sewer services and ensure financial sustainability,” said Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “When compared to other household costs—such as hydro, gas, or cable and Internet—water and sewer are the least expensive services, and the most important.”

Water and sewer user rate increases provide for the maintenance and repair of aging infrastructure, cover inflationary increases in operating costs and fund capital improvements required to comply with legislation to ensure reliable water and wastewater treatment programs.
