Durham Region releases updated demographic and socio-economic data profile

WHITBY, ON November 04, 2015

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department today released the updated Durham Region Profile—Demographics and Socio-economic Data report, which provides comprehensive information in six key categories: population; social characteristics; households; employment; income and education; and agriculture.

“The intent of the Durham Region Profile report is to provide the general public, business community and various levels of government with concise information on Durham Region’s communities and economy,” said Alex Georgieff, Commissioner of Planning and Economic Development. “The latest report includes a new category—agriculture—which is recognized as a major contributor to Durham’s economy. This is in addition to other data sets that continue to highlight the region’s growth, development and progressive opportunities.”

The Durham Region Profile report includes an infographic summary—a new feature of the report to highlight key data. Several significant findings are noted in the report:

The report was prepared by the Planning and Economic Development Department, in consultation with the Finance, Health, Social Services and Works departments, as well as the Office of the Regional Chair and Chief Administrative Officer, Durham Region Transit and Durham Regional Police Service. A majority of the data was provided by the Statistics Canada 2011 Census and National Household Survey, along with additional data contributions from the Planning and Economic Development Department, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Municipal Property Assessment Corporation.

The full report can be found online at www.durham.ca. Printed copies of the infographic summary, and CD copies of the full report, are also available on a cost-recovery basis. For more information, please contact the Planning and Economic Development Department via email at planning@durham.ca.
